Boulder Dash EX is a top down puzzle adventure game where players must collect a certain number of gems to get to the next level. Each stage has its own number of gems required to progress and there are various obstacles to avoid such as falling rocks and enemies that travel along the edges of any walls in the levels. The player digs through the levels as they play which can determine things like where enemies will travel or if a rock will fall. Because of this, players can do things such as make rocks fall on enemies to turn them into gems which is necessary to beat certain levels. Boulder Dash has had many releases though each version plays pretty much the same, but with different level layouts. Boulder Dash EX comes with a new EX mode and a Classic mode that acts as a port of the original game.

  Based on the arcade classic Boulder Dash, the game features the entire 
  original arcade game, a new mode featuring enhanced graphics and gameplay, 
  and anime-style cutscenes between levels. In all, Boulder Dash EX will take 
  players through six worlds, 50 new stages, 100 classic stages, and 50 versus 
  mode stages. Thegame alsofeatures a link-cable multiplayer mode that supports
  up to four players.
