Game Description & Reviews:
TheGoofDaddy rates this game: 3/5Champion Wrestler is a Taito release of what appears to be New japan Pro Wrestling (The way it was at the time of its release) Several of the combatants look like former (At the time current) WWF (WWE) Superstars, such as Andre the Giant, The Ultimate Warrior, and Rickey "The Dragon" Steamboat. (Which is nice because the only other game Steamboat appeared was World Championship Wrestling (NES) The game has multiple modes of play including a World Championship tournament, and a 2 player Tag Team Championship tournament. In addition to the one and two player modes, up to four human players can have a Tag Match. Wrestlers move sets include basic punches and kicks and a 4 way grapple tie up. One such tie up will put your opponent in position for moves like powerslams and suplexes, another for moves like powerbombs and Piledrivers. Once tied up, a player can also Irish Whip their opponent. (In one of 8 directions) During an Irish whip (Or at any time) a player can double tap in a direction to begin running (in one of 8 directions) to set up moves like Flying Forearms and Dropkicks or simply to rebound off the ropes. All four turnbuckles can be climbed to set up Flying Elbows and various other moves that can be performed on Standing OR prone opponents. This game no doubt shows its age, but it also proves that at the time of release it was head and shoulders above some other (Perhaps more well known) wrestling titles at the time.
TheGoofDaddy rates this game: 4/5Champions Forever boxing features 8 of Professional Boxing's most legendary combatants. The roster includes Carl Kasian, George Foreman, Rafael Chavez, Denzel Banks, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, and Ken Norton. Each bout is given a historic Tag Name Such as "The Rumble in the Jungle" There are two modes of play, which include Exhibition and Career. The exhibition is a single one or two player match. The Career Mode follows your selected boxer through several bouts leading to the Heavyweight Championship. In this title, the object (Obviously) is to punch your opponent until his HP is depleted for a knock down and eventual knockout (KO) or Technical Knockout (TKO) A TKO can occur even if your boxer could continue, but has been knocked down many times in a single round. A KO occurs if the boxer cannot answer the referee 10 count. There are two buttons to use to land punches. One button is used for different types of jabs to the head and body dependent on which D Pad direction is pressed. The other button is for landing more powerful punches to the head and body such as Hooks and Uppercuts. (This is also dependent on which D-Pad direction is pressed) Throwing punches reduces your boxer's stamina, and it reduces in greater amount if your punches are off the mark. The stamina refills slowly, but your Strength (HP) does not. If Strength reaches zero the boxer will hit the canvas and the count will begin. If a boxer finds himself in one of the losing scenarios the match is over. If the match goes the entire 12 rounds the referee will make the decision, and declare a winner. This game is well put together and whereas there are better boxing games out there, for its time this one was probably one of the best and most realistic.
